National competition judges create new category for Wiltshire serial entrepreneur Alfie Jones

Wiltshire Entrepreneur Crowned Again. Judges at the Business Champion Awards created a new category for their 2023 competition. They did it after finding themselves so impressed with the achievements of Wiltshire serial entrepreneur Alfie Jones.

At a glittering ceremony at London’s East Winter garden – hosted by BBC News at Ten anchor Huw Edwards, judges crowned Alfie Young Entrepreneur of the Year (Under 20).

The Young Entrepreneur category is open to business owners under thirty-five. But category judge Shoaib Ahmed, founder of Yello Hippo, admitted: ‘Alfie was so good that we created a second category. We wanted to recognise his talents as a young entrepreneur.

Being so young and starting a business and then scaling it. That’s shown entrepreneurial spirit that’s been incredible to see.’

Alfie said: ‘Being nineteen in an under thirty-fives category I was a small fish in a big pond. So for them to create a new category just for me meant the world.

‘This award will show the my prospective customers that I’m more than a nineteen-year old boy trying to make a living. I’m actually trying to do something serious.’

A business launched

Alfie launched The Backyard Barber RWB at the age of sixteen when Covid restrictions locked down his school. He literally got on his bike to deliver gardening services to businesses and neighbours in Royal Wootton Bassett.

He then left Royal Wootton Bassett Academy’s sixth form in 2021, at the beginning of his final year, to concentrate on growing his business. He expanded his services to include a landscaping division and created six jobs.

Then, in 2022, he bought the business Party Tents Rocks. It had been dormant since Covid. The company supplies tents for social gatherings with speakers, lighting, smoke machines, heating, and even a bar.

His entrepreneurial journey has already won him recognition on local and regional levels. In 2022, the Federation of Small Businesses named Alfie, Young Entrepreneur of the Year at their West Small Business Awards.
