Friday 7th November
Not long back Swindon’s UTC had an open day. So being a nosey Born again Swindonian I took the opportunity to pop in and have a look around. So this post is mostly by way of sharing some photographs.
I have to say I’m really impressed with the building and it just goes to show what can be done. Clearly I’m no architecture expert but I thought the marriage of old and new was very appealing visually. It’s wonderful to see the old water tower painted up and standing proudly over the college. Now – if only we could get that hooter sounded.
And of course it’s a fantastic and fitting homage to the great railway engineering works of the past that the buildings should now house a University Technical College training the engineers of the future. As it says on their website:
“UTC Swindon is passionate about preparing young people to progress to becoming outstanding engineers. Focussing on the individual, UTC Swindon ensures that each student feels supported and able to succeed.
It is our aim that all of our students will take full advantage of the hands on, project focused, team based learning opportunities the UTC offers. It is our intention that by the end of their time with us, all students will have the practical skills and experience to progress to the next step of their career, whether at university, an apprenticeship or a job.”
Together with the Outlet Village, the home of the modern-day industry of retail that has arisen from the ashes of the GWR, these UTC buildings are maintaining our links with the past while looking to the future.
More please Swindon!
